For the past three years, the Pullman Bali Legian Nirwana has been paying special attention to the art scene: design, art, photography and local culture. Now, with its newly launched “Artist Playground”, the hotel is aiming to provide a medium for artists and designers around the world to bring their vision to life by housing their works inside the hotel’s compound.
From September until December 11, Pullman Bali Legian Nirwana is teaming up with Dutch artist Irene Hoff to launch “Dreamworld”: a unique exhibition that invites visitors to spark their imaginations and escape to different worlds. Inspired by the pop-art genre and old fables, the 30 paintings displayed at the hotel’s lobby and hallway area are an amalgamation of contrasting images; an assortment of colours blends with intricate patterns and motifs, such as printed papers attached to the edge. These paintings are filled with details that require one to take a closer look to study and understand.
“I love to combine different elements in my paintings and experiment with collages,” said Irene during the launch event. “My inspirations come from various places: [from] my childhood toys to old fables with animals and angels, or even from my travels across Asia. For my new collection I tried to create a funkier paintings based on those inspirations.” The artist had her works being presented throughout Indonesia, Vietnam and Holland and uses mixed media of acrylics, oil paints and paper prints.
However, Irene confessed that among the collection (both old and new) her favourite is a painting named Motherhood that depicts a fragile-looking baby elephant painted on a grey background with tribal motifs on its side. The Bali-based artist explained the painting is inspired by elephant poaching that she is strongly against. The particular work was even autographed by actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio.
The launch event, which took place at the Pullman Bali Legian Nirwana’s intimate backyard, also merged contemporary art, fashion and food in all aspects—a serious art commitment from Pullman hotels around the world. For example, a unique fashion show by Bali-based brand Lily Jean accompanied VIP guests while they enjoyed canapes and free-flow drinks while marvelling at Irene Hoff’s fascinating collection.
