Indonesia’s premium international art fair, ART STAGE Jakarta, is back for its second edition. The positive reaction from last year’s inaugural edition has inspired the organisers to prepare an even more spectacular fair this year. Below are some of the things to look forward to at this year’s ART STAGE Jakarta:

More galleries, more art

This year’s art fair will feature some 60 galleries from around the world, quite a significant increase from last year’s 50. Of the participating galleries, 24 are from Indonesia, while the remaining 36 come from all over the world. In addition to returning galleries, a number of renowned galleries will be making their debut in Indonesia. Some of these galleries include Arario Gallery from Korea, Tomio Koyama Gallery from Japan, Parkview Art from Hong Kong, and many more.

ART STAGE Jakarta 2017 will go beyond the fairground at Sheraton Grand Jakarta Gandaria City hotel. The atrium of Gandaria City Mall will become home to a new section called The Art Square. The aim of this new section is to give art institutions, young galleries, and non-profit groups the opportunity to be part of an international art fair. This will be a crucial step in bringing the Indonesian art ecosystem to the global stage.

City of art

ART STAGE Jakarta 2017 will also feature a first-of-its-kind art event in Jakarta: the ART STAGE Jakarta Week. During the week leading up to the main fair at Sheraton Grand Jakarta Gandaria City, various venues across the city will be holding a multitude of art events. There will be no shortage of art to enjoy and appreciate during this week. Art institutes like Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Museum MACAN, Goethe-Institut Jakarta and Erasmus Huis will be involved with this amazing week of art. Events presented include exhibitions, talks, workshops, tours and many more.

Recognising the best

Another significant first in Indonesian art this year, ART STAGE Jakarta 2017 will also mark the inaugural Indonesian Award for Authenticity, Leadership, Excellence, Quality, Seriousness in Art. The award was initiated by prolific collector Alex Tedja, and conceptualised and organised by ART STAGE Jakarta. The award recognises the best of the best across the archipelago, highlighting creativity, passion, commitment, ideas and concepts of the Indonesian art world.

With this initiative, ART STAGE Jakarta intends to foster and support the local art scene, while also increasing its level of seriousness and professionalism. The Gala Award Ceremony will take place at the grand auditorium of the Institut Francais d’Indonesie.

The spread of graffiti as an art form and way of life has grown exponentially with the development of the Internet. Artists are now able to share their art with a much larger audience and at a much higher pace through social media. ART STAGE Jakarta 2017 will put a spotlight on urban and street art with a special exhibition: Off the Wall – Europe Meets ASEAN. Artists from the two regions will come together to present innovative urban art that has added vibrancy and life to urban regions around the world. Artists Farhan Siki and Chekos Art will debut their collaborative piece that measures four-by-two metres at the fair.
