One aspect of Indonesia’s cultural richness that stands out across many parts of the nations is the gamelan. The gamelan is the traditional ensemble of music from Java and Bali, but in recent years it has stretched as far as the UK, where special clubs have come together to learn and play the collection of instruments.
This international recognition has led to a proposal that gamelan be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List next year. Artists, musicians, and gamelan enthusiasts are expected to support the campaign as Education and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy also looks to spearhead the proposal. “The government has decided to propose the gamelan as the nominee from Indonesia to be sent to UNESCO next year. The discussions will commence in 2021,” he said.
