WhatsApp-Image-2018-08-05-at-3.28.35-PM-1024x666.jpgIn a bid to break a Guinness World Record, more than 65,000 people lined an 8km stretch of road from the National Monument along Jl. MH Thamrin and Jenderal Sudirman on the car-free day of August 5. At 6:46am, a siren blew following the push of a button by First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo, and the music kicked off for the crowd to poco-poco together to smash the world record.

Originating in North Sulawesi poco-poco is the country’s most popular community craze of the moment. Easily danced to the beat of cha-cha, calypso, or other 4/4 tempos, poco-poco gained popularity at the turn of the new millennium. The new century apparently intrigued people to try the dance form due to its energetic steps and movements borrowed from the military’s rhythmic gymnastics.
