Wordsmiths and word-lovers, prepare yourself for a must-visit literary event: Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (UWRF) 2017. After last year’s successful run, UWRF which is on its 14th run, is back with the first round of line-up ahead of its much-anticipated event in October.

UWRF is an annual event first founded back in 2004. Since then, the festival has evolved into one of the leading cultural and literary events in Indonesia and South-east Asia, and sees many a festivalgoer returning year after year. UWRF 2017 will take place on 25 - 29 October 2017

Who’s attending?

Authors, artists and activists who will lead this year’s five-day program of fiery discussions, literary lunches, and powerful performances, has been announced. The Festival will welcome more than 150 speakers from 30 countries, sharing bold ideas and extraordinary stories through the lens of this year’s theme, ‘Sangakan Paraning Dumadi’, or ‘Origins’.

So far, the highlights include bestselling Scotland’s king of crime writing Ian Rankin, Canadian author Madeleine Thien, whose works on diasporic histories have received universal acclaim, author Saroo Brierley, who’s novel Lion was adapted into an Academy Award nominated motion picture of the same name.

There also will be Malaysian socio-political author and activist Marina Mahathir, internationally-acclaimed climatologist and conservationist Tim Flannery, Britain’s greatest authority on Chinese food, Fuchsia Dunlop, and acclaimed Indonesian authors Seno Gumira Ajidarma and Leila S. Chudori. The full line-up for Ubud Writers & Readers Festival 2017 will be announced in August.

What are the contents of the event?

UWRF offers a dynamic programme with a distinct focus on political, social, historical and environmental issues. UWRF brings together Indonesian and international authors, artists and activists and features inspiring panel discussions, workshops, book launches and more. There will be lively dance music performances, film screenings and cocktail evenings, to complete the event.

Other than a focus on literature, what are other attractions of the event?

Though the focus of the festival is on literature, UWRF also offers a wide range of other cultural events and workshops, such as live music, poetry readings, as well as hosting different culinary experiences, where you might just end up finding yourself dining with a best-selling author.

After the festival, Tim Flannery and Kate Holden will cast off for the Komodo Islands in the latest of the Festival’s literary cruises. The chance to sail the pristine seas of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Coral Triangle, snorkel in the most bio-diverse marine ecosystem on the planet, and encounter Komodo dragons with Flannery and Holden is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Other alternative? Enjoy the festival for free by signing up as a festival volunteer. Applications for UWRF 2017 volunteers will open in early August.

How much are the tickets and where to buy them?

Early bird tickets for UWRF 2017 are on sale now. Buying the four-day Main Program Pass now gives you access to 72 panel sessions hosted in the festival’s thee main venues and saves you 20% of the normal ticket price.

The Early Bird Four-Day Main Program Pass is priced at IDR 3,200,000 (USD $240) for international visitors, with special rates available for Indonesian citizens, ASEAN passport holders and foreigners residing in Indonesia with a KITAS, business, social budaya, DINAs or retirement visa.

Tickets are available online on the festival’s website. Early Bird tickets are available until August 16, when the full line-up for Ubud Writers & Readers Festival 2017 is announced.
