Porsche Cayenne

The flashy Porsche can match the Range Rover Sport’s road-going performance, but it’s only a soft-roader when it comes to mud plugging. But that doesn’t seem to harm sales.

The car that inspired Range Rover to build the first generation of the Sport. It’s aggressively styled and has plenty of street cred but little rank in the countryside.

Jaguar F-Pace

Smaller than the Sport, the long-awaited Jag SUV was revealed in September and it’s pretty. We’ll have to see if it’s any good off-road, but the five-litre V8 version will be faaaast.

Land Rover Discovery

The no-nonsense option. Not as quick or dynamic as the Sport, but plenty of versatility and great for off-roading, towing and fitting an entire Ikea suite in the boot.
