The days are getting longer and the summer is finally in full swing. Now is the time for hanging out at the beach, splashing around in the pool, and soaking up the warm rays of sunshine. But while you may love the sun, it may not love your skin. Here are our top tips for maintaining a healthy, radiant glow throughout the summer. Your skin will thank you for it.
Water, Water, and More Water
Hydration is the key to plump, refreshed skin. Sweating under the sun drains you of your body’s water levels. Heat also dries out your skin and leaves it looking dull. Water, on the other hand, flushes out the toxins in your body. Remember to take a bottle of water wherever you go.
An alternative way to getting your day’s fill without gulping down litres of water is to eat food with a high water content. Snack on fruits and vegetables such as watermelons, cucumbers, strawberries, and iceberg lettuce.
Never Forget Your Sunscreen
Prevention is always the best cure. The harmful UV rays from the sun can cause dark spots, premature aging, and even skin cancer. Lather on sunscreen every day after your moisturiser and before your make-up to avoid sun damage.
For those of you concerned with that unattractive white cast commonly associated with sunscreens, fear not: there are tons of different types of sunscreens tailored to different needs. From sunscreen for those with oily skin to sunscreen that will protect your make-up.
Always Cleanse Your Face
After an exhausting day it might be tempting to plop into bed and sleep without properly cleansing. This bad habit will clog your pores and cause breakouts and blackheads. We recommend removing your make-up with something light yet powerful, like micellar water, and following that with your regular cleansing routine.
Similarly, after a workout—or after you work up a sweat—it’s important to wipe your face. Not only will this make you feel more refreshed, mopping sweat off your face will also prevent bacteria buildup. Stash a pack of face towels in your gym bag for cleansing on the go.
Boost Your Skincare Routine
Enrich the nutrients in your skin by including masks, exfoliants, and moisturisers to aid in hydration and reparation. For the summer, find a mask that has ingredients to help purify and detoxify the skin. Alternate between heavier clay based masks to lighter, serum-rich sheet masks each week. Rub off dead skin cells using an exfoliant or a peeling gel to brighten the skin and prevent breakouts. And don’t forget to moisturise from head to toe: the heat can really take its toll on your skin.
Don’t Skimp on Skin Superfoods
Skip the greasy food this summer and chow down on food that will make you glow from the inside out. Your diet is one of the major contributing factors to your skin’s health. Eat fresh food rich in nutrients that will aid in cell regeneration to help heal and strengthen your skin.
- Vitamin C is excellent for your skin. It is an antioxidant that helps prevent premature aging, brightens the skin, and reduces inflammation and irritation. In addition, it also promotes collagen production, which will give you firmer skin.
- Magnesium also aids in reducing inflammation. Make sure you eat your dark leafy greens this summer as they contain plenty of proteins that will boost your skin’s health.
- Vitamin A will help your skin fight against sun damage—everyone’s main concern in the summertime—as well as the appearance of acne and aging.
