Deborah Lippmann is said to be one of the best manicurists in the US, with fans including actresses Kate Winslet, Reese Witherspoon, Renée Zellweger and Penelope Cruz. “Nails are the new accessory because it’s an affordable luxury,” says Lippmann. “When you change your nail polish, you change your mood. Who do you want to be today?”

Lippmann shares her secret for ensuring that your manicure lasts longer—cap each nail with polish by taking the very tip of the varnish brush across the very tip of the nail. “It will last for days longer,” she says.

1 Remove polish and shape your nails gently with a file. Use a buffer for exfoliation and shine.

2 Apply cuticle remover.

3 Apply a base coat to protect your nails and help the polish stay on for longer.

4 Start by painting the middle of the nail. Place brush just above the cuticle and pull straight down the centre to the tip of your nail.

5 To fill in the sides, put more pressure on the brush and let the bristles span out.

6 Don’t forget a top coat.
