“It took me a lifetime.” – Pablo Picasso

Sebastian Gunawan’s journey as a fashion designer certainly bears strong resemblance to Pablo Picasso’s famous quote. This year marks the 25th year that the Indonesian designer has worked in the fashion industry and climbed his way up to the peak. To commemorate his achievement, he has partnered with wife Cristina Panarese for this year’s show “Whisper/Roar”, which was held at Ritz-Carlton, Pacific Place earlier this week.

Inspired by the romanticist European fashion of the 40s to the 60s, the dynamic duo stunned the audience with 82 pieces worthy of a museum. Although each look has a charisma of its own, there were certain ensembles that deserve mentioning. So, without further ado, here are the seven stunning looks that made our jaw drop from Sebastian Gunawan and Cristina Panarese’s “Whisper/Roar”.

Opening the show with simpler pieces, Sebastian Gunawan and Cristina Panarese still managed to wow the audience with his subtle yet strong pieces. Even without jewellery, it’s clear that the top can stand as its own statement piece. No still image can capture the strength of this ensemble—only movement will truly show the magnitude of this orange top. In addition to that, who wouldn’t appreciate the matching eye make-up?

It goes without saying that not all colour combinations match, yet somehow Sebastian and Cristina managed to combine three seemingly opposing colours so effortlessly. Speckled with dainty flower embellishments, this dress is the perfect outfit to show off your artistic side without compromising the preppy, easygoing look.

If you’re looking to make an entrance at an upcoming event, here is the outfit for you. Although the floral dress stands well on its own, the see-through cape acts as the dark foil against the bright flowers. Paired with the bright eye make-up, this look has a certain alluring flair that only the brilliant colour contrast and play in shapes can achieve.

Though this short dress might pale in comparison to the previous ensemble, don’t underestimate its beauty. There had to have been a reason for the designers to leave out accessories for this look, and we suspect that it’s because this dress reflects enough light as is. Similar to the first look, only movement can truly capture the strength of this dress. Instead of playing with extravagant shapes, Sebastian Gunawan and Cristina Panarese chose to manipulate the fabric—and it was a brilliant move at that.

If this ensemble doesn’t stun you, we don’t know what will. As perhaps one of the best fabrics in the collection, this weave pattern can light up any silhouette. Crafted from orange and gold ribbons, Sebastian and Cristina have strategically laid out the ribbons together to make this stunning weave pattern. Not only does it come in the form of a perky dress such as this, it also comes in the form of a sleek long vest.

Aside from the stunning fabrics, the designer duo also played with different sleeve silhouettes. Although the bright skirt captures your attention in an instant, it doesn’t entirely overpower the top. While one piece manipulates the colour, the latter uses the striking sleeves to attract attention. Only Sebastian Gunawan and Cristina Panarese can pull off such a look without overdoing it.

As the runway lights dimmed near the end, expectations were high for the show’s finale—and needless to say, they were more than met. For the last two looks, Sebastian and Cristina showed their two bridal dresses, both of which are big stunning gowns that took over the entire runway. Conjured from the finest most intricate lace, it doesn’t take much more for the wedding dress to claim dominance on the runway. What makes this dress so stunning is its sturdy shape reminiscent of only the best royal—or fairytale-like—weddings.
