After Peter Copping surprisingly chose to step down from his position as Creative Director for luxury fashion house Oscar de la Renta earlier this summer, the label has now named designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia as its new Co-Creative Directors.
This should come as no surprise since the duo are no strangers to the label. Kim began her career at Oscar de la Renta in 2003 and left as Design Director, while Garcia joined in 2009 and left as a senior designer giving them a combined total experience of 18 years. The two departed in spring 2015 and founded their own fashion line called Monse, which, although barely a year old, has garnered praises from critics and celebrities alike.
The American fashion house announced the move on its Instagram page. "We are pleased to announce the appointment of Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia as Co-Creative Directors of Oscar de la Renta. They begin their tenure with the Fall/Winter 2017 collection."
This means that we will still see the last of Peter Copping’s designs for Oscar de la Renta’s spring/summer 2017 collection during New York Fashion Week, which will take place on September 12.
Meanwhile, the Co-Creative Directors couldn’t contain their excitements to return to the house where they learned the fundamentals of fashion from the late Oscar himself and the business of fashion as well. “Having ... learned so much this past year with Monse, we will apply all of those lessons to expand the vision that this amazing house has already established,” said Kim and Garcia in a joint statement.
The return of the former designers is also regarded as a family affair by Oscar de la Renta CEO Alex Bolen, who praised their talents and their respect from the late Oscar de la Renta himself. “In a short period of time, Laura and Fernando have established Monse as a brand with a distinct, original point of view. Our plan is to help Monse fulfil its potential by growing quickly and profitably utilising our operating, financial and logistic systems. We look forward to Laura and Fernando once again bringing their extraordinary design skills to Oscar de la Renta," he said.
