The 88th Academy Awards ceremony—aka The Oscars—is already a wrap, hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The most celebrated figures in the cinematography world have already taken home their treasured Oscar statuettes as recognition of their achievements in the world of movies.
Leonardo DiCaprio was undoubtedly the ruler of the night, winning the Oscar for Best Actor in the film The Revenant, which earned unanimous praise. Best Actress was Brie Larson for her spectacular performance in the drama Room. Meanwhile, the biographical crime drama Spotlight took the Oscar for Best Picture, while the Best Director was Alejandro G. Iñárritu for The Revenant.
The 2016 Oscars were definitely a trending topic on social media. Plenty of attention was focused on who would win, but who stole the night for best dressed? From Jennifer Lawrence’s stunning Dior lace gown in black to Cate Blanchett’s florally embellished Armani Privé gown, take a look at our pick of the 10 best-dressed ladies on the red carpet.
1. Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence dazzled in Dior Haute Couture. She appeared on the red carpet wowing everyone with her lingerie-inspired black gown with lace and ruffles.
2. Rooney Mara
The actress stunned in a white lace gown designed by Givenchy. Her dress was a body-hugging piece, with a sensual diamond-shaped cleavage on the belly and a sky-high slit in the centre.
3. Alicia Vikander
Winning the award for Best Supporting Actress in The Danish Girl, Vikander also won on the red carpet in a custom-made Louis Vuitton gown in bleached yellow gilded with multiple silver sequins spread here and there in splashes.
4. Naomi Watts
The lovely Australian blonde Naomi Watts could undoubtedly take the most sparkling award with her Armani Privé form-fitting sequined gown in night blue, tinged with purple strokes and sparkling in all directions.
5. Lady Gaga
Nominated for Best Original Song, Lady Gaga hit the red carpet in white pants and an open skirt from Brandon Maxwell that channelled Old Hollywood glamour. It was surprising to see Gaga not dressed to shock with her eccentric looks, but rather bedazzle us with this minimalist yet elegant outfit.
6. Julianne Moore
Last’s year Best Actress winner marvelled in a black gown with embroidery at the straps. She was as amazing as ever, decked out in an exquisite all-black gown from Chanel Haute Couture with several sparkling divisions on the bodice from Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2016 Collection accompanied by Chopard jewellery. This dress definitely deserved to be among the best-dressed list at the 2016 Oscars.
7. Olivia Wilde
Olivia Wilde’s pleated apron dress from Valentino Haute Couture was exquisite, especially with the body showing cleavage on the bodice and with the back an effective contrast to the full skirt.
8. Charlize Theron
The statuesque Charlize Theron is finally back from her apocalyptic appearance in Mad Max: Fury Road and decked out in a scarlet Dior mermaid dress, registering by far the deepest plunging neckline. The diamonds from Harry Winston were her top choice to accessorise the look.
9. Brie Larson
The Best Actress winner was also a stunner in a ruffled cobalt-blue dress from Gucci. While the design was no doubt amazing, it was the little extras, like that jewelled waistline, the pearl earrings, and the sparkly hair accessories, that stole our hearts.
10. Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett didn’t bag the Oscar for Best Actress, but we know for sure that it would have looked super-harmonious with her Armani Privé aquamarine gown covered with realistic flowers and embellished with Swarovski crystals. Her jewellery choice was none other than Tiffany & Co’s bracelet and earrings. The Oscar winner made a dramatic entrance in a blue Armani Privé gown embellished with flowers.
