Cancer statistics are truly terrifying, and breast cancer is one of the hardest hitting of them all. But the question is: how many of us really pay attention to it, or do a breast self-examination, and, moreover, support the search for a cure for cancer?
In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Wanda House of Jewels recently successfully organised an event to raise awareness of the breast cancer on October 5 at On Five at the Grand Hyatt Jakarta.
Themed "A Glimmering Care", this event was supported by Yayasan Kanker Payudara Indonesia (YKPI), with overwhelming participation from many prominent women from diverse backgrounds. Indonesia Tatler also served as an official media partner for this event and the whole campaign.
In her opening speech, the founder of Wanda House of Jewels, Wanda Ponika, said that the event is dedicated to all breast-cancer survivors and warriors. She thanked everyone who came to the event for all the support, and said that they were not only guests, but also heroes.
"I myself have accompanied and witnessed two of the closest people in my life fighting for cancer. But with high spirits, courage, the willingness to fight and positive thinking, they proved that it is possible to survive. This kind of moment triggered me to create this event, and I believe that cancer is a fight we can win," said Wanda.
Linda Gumelar, Chairwoman of YKPI and also breast cancer survivor, said that the event is a campaign to raise awareness, especially about the importance of knowing how to detect the early symptoms of breast cancer. She urged all women to be aware of breast cancer risk factors, and methods to prevent it, such as conducting breast self-examinations in addition to practicing a healthy lifestyle.
Linda also highlighted the importance of partnerships in the continuous battle against cancer. She added that she was glad that many celebrities and prominent figures also participated in the campaign.
The "muses" included Raline Shah, Reza Rahadian, Sarah Sechan, Joe Taslim, Andien, Daniel Mananta, Farah Quinn, Mike Lewis, Maria Lukito, Mia Egron, Didiet Maulana, Dita Soedarjo, Hendra Nugraha, Patty Kaunang, Maura Kwik, and Rina Salim.
During the event, a video compilation of pictures and quotes from the muses was screened. And another celebrities, such as Cathy Sharon, Ari Wibowo, and Marcell Siahaan, were also joined on the stage with the muses Farah Quinn and Daniel Mananta, to give encouragement to the breast cancer survivors and warriors.
The event saw the participation of many of the guests, decked out mostly in pink according to the theme "A Touch of Pink". They were treated to afternoon canapes and enjoyable entertainment by singer Marcell Siahaan.
The afternoon was also enlivened by two fashion shows, because this is also an annual show by Wanda House of Jewels. The fashion shows featured beautiful dresses from Yanny Tan and Svarna by Didiet Maulana, and gorgeous clutches from Lungsin, all looking harmonious with the jewellery pieces, which included necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings, and brooches, all from Wanda House of Jewels.
Throughout the event, pink ribbon pendants made from white gold and pink sapphires specially created by Wanda House of Jewels were also on sale with proceeds going to the charity. "All sales from the pendants and funds from donors will be donated to YKPI to give 1,600 mammography to underprivileged women in Jakarta," said Wanda.
Other than the event, a photography exhibition is being held to complete the campaign. The exhibition is taking place in Plaza Indonesia and aims to display and deliver inspiration and hope through a mix of photos and quotes from muses. It runs throughout October.
