We have just caught our breath with the glamorous wedding of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, and lo and behold another lavish Indian wedding began last week. The wedding celebration of Isha Ambani and Anand Piramal—daughter of Asia’s wealthiest man Mukesh Ambani—which started last Saturday has stirred up a storm on the Internet. Why? Because reportedly the weeklong wedding celebration cost around US$100 million, topping even Prince Harry’s and Meghan Markle’s nuptials. Here are the five things you need to know about the big, fat Indian wedding.
The multi-generational Ambanis have long been known as India’s richest family, and, as of 2018, Mukesh Ambani is officially the richest man in Asia, toppling Alibaba’s Jack Ma. Serving as the CEO of Reliance Industry, Mukesh Ambani is worth approximately US$47 billion according to Forbes, with his company dealing in oil and telecommunications, among other things. Business magnate Mukesh Ambani is married to Nita Ambani, and together they have three children. Their daughter, Isha Ambani, is marrying her childhood beau on December 12, and for this, Mukesh is sparing no expense. Who’s the lucky guy? Rest assured that the groom comes from an affluent family: he’s billionaire Ajay Piramal’s son, Anand.
Private Beyoncé concert
The weeklong extravaganza started off at the picturesque Udaipur City Palace, where lucky attendees were treated to a special concert by none other than American superstar Beyoncé. The singer took to Instagram and shared pictures of herself in glorious custom Indian attire especially made by Abu Jani- Sandeep Khosla. The fabulous chanteuse serenaded the crowd with her hit single—and perfect couple’s first dance—“Perfect”, followed by “Crazy in Love”, which literally brought down the house.
Hillary Clinton and Bollywood celebrities
What about the lucky attendees? Of course, with this kind of wedding special attention was paid to the invited guests. From family friend Hillary Clinton to business tycoons including Henry Kravis and John Kerry to famous celebrities like Aishwarya Rai, Deepika Padukone, newlyweds Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas to Arianna Huffington, the evening was star-studded, indeed.
Chartered planes and custom wedding app
For the special occasion, the Ambanis are renting more than five five-star hotels in Udaipur and offered to fly their wedding guests via private jets (100 chartered flights were reported). Not stopping there, to show their affection and gratitude for the city of Udaipur, the Ambanis donated food to feed 5,100 people for four days and even set up a bazaar to showcase traditional Indian paintings and pottery by local artisans. Last, but not least, for the nuptials, the Ambanis created a special mobile app for guests if and when they have questions regarding the event.
While the pre-wedding events has upped the ante and shocked the world, the wedding on December 12 will be held at the Ambanis’ 27-storey Antilia palace in Mumbai before they waltz into their US$64 million diamond-themed mansion at the Gulita building in Mumbai. Around 600 guests are invited.
