There’s nothing impossible for Okky Asokawati as long as she has faith, focus, a strong will, and perseverance. “We can all achieve success provided that we have a strong determination to make it happen,” she tells Indonesia Tatler.

This passionate woman has managed to carve out a career in two different worlds. Okky is not only known as a former top model from the 70s, she is also now active in the political world. Having previously served as a member of the People’s Representative Council of the Republic of Indonesia’s United Development Party (PPP), Okky has now decided to run as a legislative candidate for the the National Democratic Party (NasDem) in the 2019 legislative election.

For the Jakarta-born Okky, the decision to join NasDem was based on her admiration of the party, which is led by Surya Paloh. NasDem has a vision for change as well as a focus on preparing Indonesia’s finest talents from the millennial generation to become future leaders. This is reflected in the establishment of the National Defense Academy (ABN) of the NasDem party. ABN educates and shapes the physical, mental, and intellectual qualities of millennials in navigating the waves of change that will result in Golden Indonesia in 2045.

Furthermore, Okky, who earned her master’s degree in psychology at the University of Indonesia, says that politics is the highest path of devotion in human life. In this context, politics means how to achieve prosperity for the people as a main goal by putting aside personal and group interests.

From Okky’s perspective, as a legislative candidate for DPR RI, she will continue to call for fairness and support for women in the country. The role and involvement of women in the economic and political sectors, the issue of maternal and child health, and the protection of women from threats of violence, are strategic matters that must be the concern of all elements of society and government.

“Women are the fortress of the family and the pillar of the country,” she says. “If a woman is smart and full of confidence as well as physically and mentally healthy, we will definitely have a smart and qualified younger generation in the future.”
