Four influential artists in their respective disciplines have been named mentors in the 2020-2021 Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, and these world-renowned innovators will each spend the next two years with a young artist ready to set the world on fire. American filmmaker Spike Lee will work closely with Kyle Bell, British director Phyllid Lloyd with Whitney White, American artist Carrie Mae Weems with Camila Rodríguez Triana, and American composer, lyricist and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda with Agustina San Martín.
The Rolex Arts Initiative has paired 54 of the world’s greatest artists with up-and-coming stars from all over the world since 2002. The 2018−2019 Arts Initiative series marked a change in the programme structure with mentorships addressing disciplines in alternating periods and taking place in architecture, dance, literature and music, while the current programme will see breakthroughs in film, theatre, visual arts and an “open category” mentorship.
Exemplifying the tradition of supporting and perpetuating excellence, the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative seeks out gifted young artists in a variety of disciplines from around the world and pairs them with artistic masters for a period of mentoring and creative collaboration. In keeping with its tradition of supporting quality, performance and excellence—all values inherent in Rolex—the company provides emerging talents with the time to learn, create and grow.
The Arts Initiative has thus evolved into an enriching and fulfilling dialogue between artists of different generations, cultures and disciplines, ensuring that the world of art transcends beyond time and across borders and ethnicity. Since its inception at the beginning of the 20th century, Rolex has encouraged individual excellence and the perpetual pursuit of perfection in all its endeavours from watchmaking to the many people and activities it supports, including sports, the environment, exploration, and arts and culture.
