Summer is shining in many parts of the world and festivals are blooming all over. From wacky, child-friendly events to religious and other different moods, summer is full of choices. Here, we suggest five diverse festivals from one that’s locally made to others scattered around the world. 


The music scene here has been getting exposure as the years pass by, including the Sunny Side Up Tropical Festival in Bali. As a highly anticipated event on August 13 and 14, this year's performers will include DJs Disclosure and Mark Ronson, Dipha Barus, George Maple and more. Partygoers will be dancing at Potato Head Beach Club's white-sand beach in the Seminyak area, replete with food and entertainment options.

South Africa

Spend a naturally gorgeous weekend at the Hermanus Whale Festival from September 30 to October 2 in the coastal town of Hermanus. This is the migration season for the southern right whales to avoid the cold and join in the summer festivities. Arts and crafts, music, coaching clinics, children entertainment and a Marine eco-village are just a few fun activities to accompany watching the whales breaching. Museums are also available to learn about the connection between the town and the whales, plus an annual hidden-treasures guide for visitors to unearth those secret places that only locals know.  


Classical and jazz music lovers will flock from around the world to the Verbier Festival in Switzerland that runs from July 22 to August 7. Masterclasses, wine tastings, concerts and ski sessions are the peaks of this exciting events. This year's lineup ranges from pianist Yuja Wang to conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, singer Diane Reeves, the Gypsy Kings and much more.


The country's capital will be burning up from August 18 to 31 during the Tango Buenos Aires festival. Contestants from near and far will gather to compete in two categories: tango de pista (salon tango), with its strict, traditional tango movements, and tango escenario (stage tango), with choreography and movements from other dances incorporated into the tango. There will also be a product fair concerts, classes and milongas sessions—dances with basic tango elements with faster movements and less pauses.

United States

Flicker's Rhode Island International Film Festival will be screening a range of independent movies from August 9 to 14. Now into its 20th year, this festival is one of six qualifying festivals for the BAFTA and also the Academy Awards. Besides the main events, there are also the KidsEye International Film Festival and Summer Filmmaking Camp, the Spanish Film Series, the Rhode Island Film Forum, the Golden Jasmine Film Festival and the Roving Eye International Film Festival, among others.
