Read on to find out about the best places to visit, stay and dine.
The first stop on any trip should be Athens, the capital city of Greece. Kick off your journey by walking uphill to see the Acropolis, the ancient citadel that contains the remains of ancient buildings of great architectural and historic significance, the most famous being the Parthenon.
Then stroll around Thissio, a lovely neighbourhood right in under the Acropolis that is packed with outdoor cafeterias, making it a favourite coffee spot for locals and tourists. Another must-visit is Plaka, the most picturesque residential quarter in the heart of Athens, with its lovely paved streets and neoclassical houses. Don’t forget to shop for gifts and souvenirs at Monastiraki’s flea market, a bustling, vibrant area that is also home to plenty of cafés and restaurants.
Feeling a bit adventurous? Trek up Lycabettus Hill, the highest point in Athens, which offers breathtaking, panoramic views. Visit the modern Piraeus, the largest port in Greece and, relax at the lovely seaside coffee shops. For scenic photography lovers, the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion—one of the oldest temples in Greece—won’t disappoint, with its magnificent and magical views over the cerulean-blue Aegean Sea.
While in Athens, tantalise your taste buds at Michelin-starred restaurants like Spondi and Hytra. Spondi boasts signature dishes that include Langoustine, Crab and Milk-fed Lamb, while Hytra has two distinct menus for discerning diners: Hytra Gourmet and Hytra Apla. Dedicated hedonists should then make Lohan Nightclub, the eponymous club owned by the American actress Lindsay Lohan, their final stop of the night.
Next stop is Santorini, the most popular island in Greece. Santorini is the perfect travel destination: a combination of beautiful beaches, spectacular scenery, ancient cities and amazing restaurants like Aegeon Restaurant in Imerovigli, with its famous dishes like Aegean Sea Bass Fillet and Grilled Squid. While breathing in fantastic sunset views, enjoy a sumptuous dinner at Argo Restaurant, which offers up a very special lobster spaghetti, as well as fresh fish and a special menu for vegetarians.
Take time out to visit the ancient city of Akrotiri, as well as the magical Firostefani village, a quiet and beautiful village in Santorini with a stunning caldera view and the hidden gem of Pyrgos Village. Pyrgos is located on a fabulous spot on top of a hill, the highest point of Santorini, and offers incredible panoramic views of the whole island.
On to the north-western tip of Santorini is the coastal town Oia. For lunch, head to Ammoudi Fish Tavern, an iconic seafood restaurant at Ammoudi Bay and sail around the famous Red, White and Black Beach taking a dip in the green sulphur waters of the hot springs. And one thing you mustn’t miss in Oia is the stunning sunset views in Santorini, best enjoyed while having a scrumptious barbecue on the boat.
